ASWNMU SENATE MEETING

November 28, 2000
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Vice President
Denton at 7:30 a.m.
II. Pledge of Allegiance
III. Roll Call
Senators Castillo, Gomez, Kenny, Levitt, Perez, Preston,
Romano, Rutherford, Talimatasi, and Urquijo were present
for the Senate. Senate Secretary Amavizca and Senator
Guevara were absent.
IV. Approval of Agenda
Senator Romano moved to approve the agenda. Senator
Castillo seconded. Motion carried 10-0.
V. Approval of the Minutes
Senator Urquijo moved to table the approval of the
minutes from November 14th . Senator Talimatasi seconded.
Motion carried 10-0.
VI. Executive Council Reports
A. President Murguia
President Murguia asked the Senate to allocate $800
to pay for Secretary Zuniga's stipend. He also informed
the Senate that he was interested in forming a joint
committee consisting of two Executive Council members
and two Senate members to plan an end of the year
Christmas party. President Murguia also suggested
in forming a joint committee to plan final week activities.
He suggested having the cafeteria opened late to aide
those student studying late. He asked that both committees
consider costs. This concluded his report.
B. Vice President Denton
Vice President Denton informed the Senate that a Pajama
Jam was being planned for December 2nd. The dance
will be held from 10:00 p.m.-2:00 a.m. at the merry-go-round.
This concluded her report.
C. Chief of Staff Loving
Chief of Staff Loving reminded the Senate of the winners
of the Homecoming Floats. She recognized Mecha for
having the Most Creative float, the Cheerleaders for
the Most Colorful float, and the Alumni's Royalty
float as Best All Around. Chief of Staff Loving presented
a trophy to the Biology club for the float Closest
to the Theme. This concluded her report.
D. Secretary Zuniga Nothing to report.
E. Treasurer Bocanegra Nothing to report.
F. Attorney General Hazlett Attorney General Hazlett
informed the Senate that he and Vice President Denton
had been working together to establish standing rules
for the Senate. He informed the Senate that they would
be meeting in caucus with the Senate to discuss the
finer points of standing rules. This concluded his
report.
G. Governmental Affairs Director Luna Governmental
Affairs Director Luna informed the Senate that he
received 306 surveys but he would like to have at
least 500. Governmental Affairs Director Luna encouraged
the Senators to conduct more surveys. Surveys could
be obtained in the Student Council offices. At this
point Governmental Affairs Director Luna yield the
floor to Chief of Staff Loving. Chief of Staff Loving
informed the Senate that a committee had been formed
to evaluate the results from the surveys. The committee
consists of President Murguia, Chief of Staff Loving,
Attorney General Hazlett, Governmental Affairs Director
Luna, Secretary Zuniga, Senator Pro-Tempore Gomez,
and Senator Talimatasi.
VII. Old Business
A. Senator Castillo - Senate Stipends Senator Castillo
informed the Senate that at the last ASWNMU meeting
he did not specify the date in which the Senators
would receive their stipends. These were the stipends
that were approved at the November 14, 2000 senate
meeting. The attached Senators Stipend form is with
the November 14, 2000 minutes. He suggested that stipends
be received at the next Senate meeting on December
7th. Discussion: There was a question about who would
be authorizing the stipends since President Murguia
would not be here in the coming week. Chief of Staff
Loving informed the Senate that Secretary Zuniga was
authorized. Senator Urquijo moved to receive the Senate
stipends and to discuss stipends for next semester
at the next Senate meeting on December 7th. Senator
Talimatasi seconded. Motion carried 10-0.
VIII. New Business
A. Chief of Staff Loving - End of Semester committee
Chief of Staff Loving asked the Senate to choose two
Senators to serve on the End of Semester committee.
Senator Rutherford and Senator Castillo volunteered
to serve on the End of Semester committee.
B. Chief of Staff Loving - Christmas Party committee
Chief of Staff Loving asked the Senate to choose two
Senators to serve on the Christmas Party committee.
Floor Leader Preston, Senator Kenny and Senator Gomez
volunteered for the Christmas Party committee.
C. Vice President Denton Vice President Denton asked
the Senate to allocate $300 dollars for the Pajama
Jam Dance scheduled for December 2nd. Senator Talimatasi
moved to allocate $300 to Vice President Denton for
the Pajama Jam on December 2nd. Senator Kenny seconded.
Motion carried. 7-0.
D. Chief of Staff Loving asked the Senate to allocate
$800 for Secretary Zuniga's stipend. Senator Romano
moved to allocate $800 for secretary Zuniga's stipend.
Senator Talimatasi seconded. Motion carried 7-0.
E. Club Allocation
1. John Gosek asked the Senate to allocate $211.06
to use for publicity for the WNMUNEA Statewide Student
Leadership conference (See attached proposal) Senator
Levitt moved to allocate $211.06 to the WNMUNEA under
the stipulation that two Senators would be allowed
to attend the conference and receive $75.00 stipends.
Senator Kenny seconded. Motion carried 7-0.
IX. Announcements
Vice President Denton asked the Senate to advertise
the Pajama Jam. The next meeting is on December 7th
at 7:15 a.m.
X. Adjournment
Senator Talimatasi moved to adjourn at 8:45 a.m. Seconded
by Senator Romano. Motion carried 7-0.
