WNMU FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF

  CHARLEY WADE -- HEAD COACH

When WNMU fans got word that Charley Wade would be back to coach the team a couple of years back,  there was genuine excitement in Silver City and within the alumni. Folks knew that Wade would bring a brand of football that was exciting and would put “butts in the seats.” They were right.

While only going 3-7 in 2001, and 2-7 in 2002, Wade’s brand of offensive football does score points., and the games have been increasingly competitive. The pass-happy Mustangs averaged almost 24 points per game during the last two seasons and, more importantly, were fun to watch. Upon taking the Head Coaches’ job in the Spring of 2000, the first thing on his agenda was to upgrade a lethargic offense and over the past two seasons, the 35-year coaching veteran has done just that. The 2003 recruiting class has focused on the defensive side of the ball and the improvement should be immediately noticable.

The 2001 season  was Coach Wade’s second time to lead the Purple and Gold. The 63-year-old ball of energy ran the team during the 6-4 campaign of 1994, before returning to his alma mater, Southwestern Missouri State the following year. In addition to the 1994 season, Coach Wade was the offensive coordinator from 1991-93, seasons that saw the Mustangs advance to the NAIA playoffs.

Prior to his return to Grant County last year, Wade spent the 1996-1999 seasons at the University of Central Arkansas, where he was the offensive coordinator for the Bears, a highly competitive program throughout the southern region of the United States. Other coaching stints have included — Fort Lewis College, Southwest Missouri, Peru State, Univ. of Missouri, University of Minnesota and Arkansas Tech where he focused primarily on the offensive side of the football.

Coach Wade received his B.A. from Southeast Missoui in 1964 and his M.A. from Truman State in 1965.  He and LaDonna, his wife of 38 years, have three sons — Chris, Eric and Craig as well as three grandchildren.  When Coach Wade isn’t studying film, his interests include horses, computer diagnostics and motorcycling.

KEN FOERSCH — ASST. HEAD COACH

Coach Foersch is entering his third year with WNMU football and the experience has been a positive one. After just two years at WNMU, Coach Foersch has demonstrated that he has a bright future in the coaching game and was promoted to the Number 2 man in the program because of his knowledge, experience and work ethic. It doesn't hurt either that Foersch knows his way around big- time football. As a three-year starter for the Bulldogs as an offensive lineman, Coach Foersch will be able teach his offensive line personnel all the tricks of the trade that made him an All-WAC selection and a dominating force at Fresno.

A native Californian, Foersch is no rookie to coaching either. He was with Fresno during the last two seasons, while earning his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership capping off a remarkable academic career as well.

CHENELLE JONES  -- DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Coach Jones rejoins the Mustangs, but this time the 30-year-old has traded in his helmet for cap and a whistle. After stints at Arizona Western College (Asst. Head Coach) and Dodge City Community College (Secondary Coach), Jones has had a big effect on the recruiting class of 2003 in a very short period of time. His travels and contacts have taken him nationwide, while maintaining the regional flavor of New Mexico, Arizona, California and Texas that WNMU built so much success in the early 1990s.

As a player at WNMU from 1991-95, Coach Jones' credentials were equally impressive as he was named an All-American in both the NCAA and NAIA for his outstanding play at the Safety position after leading the nation in interceptions in his senior year.

KEVIN MURPHY -- RUNNING BACKS/KICKING GAME

Coach Murphy joins WNMU's staff fresh off a tremendously successful run as a player at Fresno State. As a Bulldog, the 23-year-old was an All-WAC selection for three seasons from his difficult position of Deep Snapper. In addition, Coach Murphy, was the Special Teams Captain at Fresno in 2002 and was twice named to the All-WAC Academic team.

A native of nearby San Diego, CA, Coach Murphy is embarking on a career in Coaching and WNMU is his first stop. His Dad and grandfather have had storied careers in the coaching ranks that have included stints in the pros and at storied Notre Dame.

KAHLIL NASH -- DEFENSIVE ENDS

TREVOR HIGHFIELD -- DEFENSIVE TACKLES

Coach Highfield makes his debut at WNMU after coaching at the High School level and handling teaching duties at Cass High in Sierra Vista, CA. While he is new to the collegiate coaching ranks, he is not, by no stretch of the imagination, new to college football. In fact, he is one of the sport's elite because of the National Championship ring he wears. Highfield wore the purple and gold of the Washington Huskies from 1991-95 and was the Offensive Lineman of the year in 1995. In addition, the "U-Dub"  Hall of 'Famer was a First Team all-Pac-10 selection the same year and played in two Rose Bowls.

Coach Highfield received his B.S. in Sociology from UW and is working on his Master's Degree at WNMU in Educational Leadership.

COREY ROBINSON -- RECEIVERS

It seems that Palatka, FL is a long way from Silver City, but Coach Corey Robinson has been here before. His last stint in New Mexico saw Robinson as one of WNMU's top receivers on two of WNMU's best-ever football squads, the 1993 and 1994 teams. He and teammates Bobby Felix, Tim Bridges and Tyrone Ratliffe were nearly unstoppable for Coach Wade during that period and Robinson is bringing his knowledge of Wade's offensive scheme back to the new kids on the block. Most recently Coach Robinson has coached at the High School level in Florida and Texas and he has made a name for himself there as well. His students include Florida State's Tight End Brian Kuhn and the University of Texas' highly touted recruit Tyrell Gatewood.

Prior to coming to WNMU to play, Robinson served in the Persian Gulf. He received his B.S. degree in Social Work from WNMU in 1995, and is continuing his education by pursing his Master's Degree in Counseling.
