BYU-HAWAII SLIPS PAST MUSTANGS

Silver City, NM – Seventeenth-ranked BYU-Hawaii nearly fell to their third Division II team in two weeks, but held on to take a heart-pounding 86-82 win over Western New Mexico Saturday in Silver City. The Seasiders trailed by as many as four points in the first half, but never trailed in the second despite a desperate comeback attempt by the Mustangs. BYU-Hawaii moves to 19-4 (8-2 in the PacWest) while Western New Mexico fell to 7-14 (4-7).

The game was barnburner throughout. Both teams were knotted at 41 points at the intermission but the Seasiders opened up nine-point lead in the second half when WNMU got two technical fouls within a two-minute period. BYU-H out rebounded the Mustangs 28-20 for the game, a total that is uncommonly low for college basketball – but the teams field goal percentages were 58 (BYUH) and 55 (WNMU) for the game … there just weren’t a lot of rebounds available. The Seasiders turned over the ball 25 times to WNMU’s 20.

The Mustangs had four players in double figures on the night, with Matt Enriquez (El Paso, TX) leading the way with 25 points and seven assists. Adam Grimes (Farmington, NM) checked in with 16 points, while Albuquerque natives Jason Jackson and Jerry Martinez checked in with 14 and 11 points respectively.

The Seasiders also saw four players make to into double figures. Austin Smiley went 6-of-7 from the free throw line for 22 points. Michael Stowell knocked home 19 points – 12 from beyond the three-point line and Shawn Opunui and Jake Chrisman checked in with 16 and 10 points respectively.

The Mustangs head to the Islands Sunday for a February 17 battle with Hawaii Hilo, a team they swept in Silver City two weeks ago. The Seasiders get a little break from the schedule as they next meet Hilo on February 24.

HPU ENDS WNMU STREAK

Silver City, NM Ice cold shooting and four double-figure scorers from the opposition ended WNMU’s four-game winning streak Thursday night as Hawaii Pacific University handed the Mustangs their loss first in five games, 71-60 in Silver City. WNMU fell to 7-13 (4-6) and HPU improved to 8-14 (5-5).

The Mustangs shot a season-low 27 percent from the field in the contest, including an icy 0-14 effort from the three-point line in the second half. HPU hit on 45 percent of their field goal attempts. Still, the game was quite a contest, with WNMU trailing by as few as three points with four minutes left. The Sea Warriors sealed the victory with solid free throw shooting in the waning moments.

Brendon Malone (El Paso, TX) scored 23 points for the Mustangs, while fellow El Pasoan Matt Enriquez chipped in 13. Albuquerque’s James Newell also made the double figure bracket with 10.

The Sea Warriors turned around a poor shooting night of their own on Tuesday with Thursday’s win and were paced by a double-double performance by Audrius Peciukas’ 18 points and 13 rebounds. Albert Tecul knocked in 17 points while Marvin Noble and Aaron Abrams added 14 points each.

WNMU entertain league-leading BYU-Hawaii Saturday night in the final game of a seven game home stand.

CSU-PUEBLO KNOCK OFF STANGS -- AGAIN

Pueblo, CO-- Colorado State University extended it win streak to four with a decisive 83-61 victory over WNMU Monday night. It was the Thunderwolves second-straight win over the Mustangs (0-2).

WNMU hadn't played in a week and CSUP had played three times in six days, but fatigue wasn't a factor. In fact, the Purple Gang from Silver City got in town Sunday, had a shoot-around and looked linen-fresh during Monday's warmup, but the T-Wolves just took care of business. CSU-P got a leg up with some early deadeye shooting for an 11-0 lead and later used a 30-2 run in the second half to claim an 83-61 victory.

The Mustangs were led by Matt Enriquez (El Paso, Bel Air HS), with 24 points. WNMU  had only one other double digit scorer, forward Jason Jackson's  (Albuquerque, Highland HS) 13. The Thunderwolf defense held Western to 40.4 percent shooting accuracy from the floor, notching 17 turnovers.

MUSTANGS FALL IN DEBUT

Silver City, NM – Western New Mexico University’s Men’s basketball team fell 88-61 to the Colorado State University – Pueblo (formerly the University of Southern Colorado), Monday night in Silver City in their 2003-04 debut. CSU-P moved to 1-0 on the season, although the ThunderWolves dropped an exhibition game to Division I Denver University last week.

The two teams battled fairly evenly for much of the first half, but CSU-P’s defensive adjustments were too much for the Mustangs for the rest of the game. Sophomore Matt Enriquez (El Paso, TX) led the way for the Mustangs with 18 points and six rebounds. James Newell (Albuquerque) chipped in 14 points and three rebounds while Jason Jackson (Albuquerque) added 11 points on the night.

The Thunderwolves were paced by Alfred Sanchez’s 20-point night.  The two teams meet again on November 24 in Pueblo.
