Western New Mexico University (1-1, 0-1) held
on to defeat the visiting Paul Quinn College (0-2) Tigers in
non-conference football action Saturday at the Ben Altamirano
Sports Complex in Silver City, NM, 19-12. Despite PQC's final
closing minute surges, Western's defense held strong forcing the
Tigers to turn it over on downs clenching the win.
WNMU's special teams proved to be the key as
Sean Sehnam drilled four field goals through the uprights giving
the Mustangs a 12-0 halftime lead. Sehnam connected from 31 yards,
34 yards, 38 yards, and 27 yards and added the extra point onto
Western's lone touchdown.
WNMU scored the first touchdown of the game in
the third quarter as Lateef Azziz ran it in four yards to give the
Mustangs a 19-0 lead.
The Tigers answered as second-string
quarterback Marcus Carter connected a 2 yard pass to Justin
Johnson, but failed to complete the two-point conversion.
Heading into the fourth quarter of play WNMU
led 19-6. With six minutes and forty-seven seconds left in play,
Paul Quinn's defense made a game of it as Lantz Mathers picked up
a Mustang fumble and ran it into the endzone. The PAT by Joseph
Blanco failed, giving the Mustangs a 19-12 lead with six minutes
and 20 seconds left in regulation. Despite the Tigers offensive
efforts marching all the way into the WNMU thirty yard line, they
eventually turned it over on downs with 12 seconds left in play.
The win marks the first win of the 2006 WNMU
football season as the Mustangs lost last week to RMAC
championship contender Fort Lewis College. The 'Stangs will be
back in action to host the RMAC rival Mesa State College on
Saturday, September 16, 2006. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m., MST.
