La Familia Training and Technical Assistance Program

La Familia's mission is to connect cargivers, families, and children with quality resources, education and support within their communities, create community collaboration and training opportunities, and provide resources to improve the quality of child care and parenting in Southwestern New Mexico.
We can help by...
  • Serving as a "ready" resource of current information on child development issues for parents, early care providers, WNMU students and the community at large.
  • Supporting parents and families by providing parenting classes and consumer education/training about the selection of quality, adequate, safe early care and education settings/experiences for children.
  • Preparing future as well as existing early care and family support providers of qualitychild care through workshops, 45 Hout Entry Level classes and other training.
  • Maintaining a free lending library of developmentally appropriate toys and resources as well as equipment.
  • Helping all caregivers understand the growth and development of young children, birth through eight years of age.
  • Serving in a leadership capacity by colaborating with agencies and organizations dedicated to advocating for young children and their families.

Professional Training and Technical Assiststance

Early Childhood training for those working with young children and families is available throughout the four-county service delivery area which includes Grant, Hidalgo, Luna and Catron Counties. All trainings are based on the NM competencies for Early Childhood Education and most trainings are free of charge.

Training Includes:
  • Evening and weekend workshops
  • 45-Hour Early Entry Level Course
  • Customizeed training through the AIM HIGH initiative
Toy and Resource Lending Library

Visit La Familia and you will find a lending library stocked with:
  • TOYS for infants through school-age children
  • EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
  • VIDEOS, BOOKS, MAGAZINES, AND OTHER RESOURCES
  • EQUIPMENT like cribs, strollers and high chairs
  • RESOURCES such as dramatic play materials, blocks, infant stimulation toys, bilingual materials, science and math materials, gross motor equipment, puzzles, dress up clothes, and wide variety of educational toys!

Resource and Referral Services:


We understand the challenges of finding quality childcare. Our referral service assists parents in evaluating their childcare needs and helps them select a program that will best suit those needs. Parents are encouraged to visit providers and get specific information on types of services provided, hours of operation, and fees for childcare homes and centers.

TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families):

We offer special services to TANF recipients interested in the profession of child care and assist quialified participants with basic equipment and training for establishing and operating a child care business.

AIM HIGH:

AIM HIGH is a state-funded program working to improve the quality and standards of all child care programs, including family child care homes. AIM HIGH works with directors and staff to help achieve this goal, and provides financial incentives.

Parent Support Groups:

La Familia will provide information and help link parents to the various support groups and resources available in our area.

Resource Lending Library


You'll find a lending library stocked with:
  • TOYS for infants through school-age children
  • EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS
  • VIDEOS, BOOKS, MAGAZINES, and OTHER RESOURCES available to parents, grandparents, providers, caregivers, teachers, students & foster parents.
Resources Include: Dramatic play materials, block play, infant stimulation toys, Spanish materials, Science and Math materials, gross motor equipment, books on child development, parenting, special needs, etc., and baby equipment-- car seats, cribs, strollers, playpens, backpacks, snugglies...

For Parents and Families:

ENHANCED REFERRAL SERVICES
Connect parents with one of the many child care providers on the provider referral list.Parents are encouraged to visit providers and get specific information on types of services provided and specific information such as hours of of operation, availability, and fees of various child care homes and centers.

CONSUMER EDUCATION

La Familia supports and encourage parental choice in selecting child care services through consumer education to help in choosing the most appropriate child care for their families. Educating parents in regaining their rights to obtain quality, adequate, safe child care for their children.

PARENT SUPPORT GROUPS

La Familia will provide information and help link parents to the various support groups available in our area.

Helps child care work for children, youth, families and communities of southwestern New Mexico by:
  • Providing training and technical assistance to improve the quality of care for children
  • Maintaining a free lending library of developmentally appropriate toys and materials as well as equipment
  • Linking providers to relevant training resources
  • Collaborating with community partners to identify and document service gaps, and help find solutions
  • Helpling to improve the quality of child care programs/ centers through Aim High and the 45-Hour Entry Level Course
  • Serving as a ready source of information on child development issues and publishing a quarterly newsletter
  • Helping all caregivers understand the growth & development of young children birth through eight years of age.
