School Age Program

Purpose

The School Age Program was developed to provide quality care for elementary school children in a before and after school setting. The program is a state-licensed non-profit organization collaborating between the WNMU Child Development Center and the Silver Consolidated School District.

Philosophy

The School Age Program has a caring and positive atmosphere in which each child is respected and accepted as a unique and valuable individual. Children are encouraged to express themselves through language, art, music, movement, dramatic play and social interaction in age appropriate activities, as an extension of the child's school day. The staff is responsible for providing a stimulating but safe environment in which children learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children and materials. Curriculum provides growth in all areas in a child's development-physical, social, emotional and cognitive-in a challenging, nurturing climate. Parents and home environment provide the most significant contributions to a child's development. Our everyday modeling is absolutely crucial to help the children learn; to affirm themselves and others; to accept and affirm people's differences; to cooperate to achieve common goals; to communicate concerns constructively; and, putting all these together, to use appropriate ways to prevent and resolve conflict. The other crucial part of the process is providing children with regular opportunities to develop and practice the skills and attitudes necessary for successful conflict resolution.

Curriculum

The activities and environment are developmentally appropriate whenever possible. Materials and time are provided for children to elect their own activities.
- cooking - art - homework
- games - crafts - field trips
  - recreation
