Degree Production in Disciplines Related to the Behavioral Sciences 1994 – 2004 Projections of Occupational Demand Awards Over Time Institutional Providers In State Retention of Graduates March 10, 2005 Overview: The projected demands for “Behavioral Health” workers are based on New Mexico Department of Labor 2012 employment forecasts. There will be approximately 2,500 openings annually in fields related to this area. The production of graduates from the higher education prepared to work in these fields is significantly below that number. However, note that approximately 1,300 of these openings are in areas of comparatively low skill “Aide” positions. These positions are likely filled by people who receive training from sources other than colleges and universities. The related degree programs listed below may prepare individuals for multiple career paths. The result is that various sectors of the behavioral health profession are competing for a limited number of graduates within New Mexico in addition to facing competing recruitment from out state employers for the same graduates. In particular, psychology, social workers, nurses, and school guidance counselors show higher than average attrition from New Mexico after graduation. The tables reflect data from institutionally submitted data files from 1994-2004 and data matches between those records and data from the New Mexico Department of Labor. The Princeton Review cites nursing as one of the top 5 most popular academic majors in its most recent national survey. The output of nurses from the higher education system closely approximates the demand. However, the out migration of nurses in the state after graduation creates a gap of approximately 45 R.N.’s annually. A significant issue in the continued production of nursing graduates is the anticipated retirement of significant numbers of teaching faculty and the difficulty in recruitment of replacements.
