CETAL LAB: A 50 minute kick-off into a two-week, self-paced online module about instruction and assessment, individual investment of 4-6 hours.

  1. Not All of Us Learn in Words (QM Standard 1)

    1. Organizing visually (graphic syllabus, webbing a course, no paragraph instructions and rubrics).
    2. Show, don't tell.
    3. Acting it out to get it across.
    4. Scenarios, case studies, and what-if's: More than the boring page.
    5. Note-taking just went up a notch!

  2. Creative Assessment (QM Standard 3)

    1. Essay? Discussion? Worksheet?  Check "Other!"
    2. Allowing students to create assignments and learning objects as ways to assess learning.
    3. The research on the advantage of frequent, low-stakes quizzing.
    4. Self-assessment as a valuable and viable tool.

    1. The rise of online, open source materials.
    2. Write your own text! Alternatives you never had before.
    3. Advances in no-print alternatives (audio, screen markup).
    4. Take it with you! Mobile devices and instructional materials.
    5. Straight from his mouth to your ear. Using experts as learning material.

  4. SEAL of Approval - Students Engaged in Active Learning (QM Standard 5)

    1. What is active learning?
    2. Engaging activities vs. busy work.
    3. Monitoring and documenting student interaction.
    4. NOT one-size fits all!

  5. All Together Now! Group Activities and Projects (QM Standard 5)

    1. Group activities and project set-up and instruction.
    2. How to handle groups that don't get along.
    3. What's fair in grading practice?
    4. How to respond to the complaints and justify the outcomes.


      Kick-Off January 30 - 2:00 PM

  6. The Magic of Choice - Offer Variety in Assignments (QM Standard 5)

    1. The "Choose One" model.
    2. Addressing diverse learning styles with assignment choice.
    3. Metacognition and growing students who know how they learn.
    4. Ten activities that make them think-what research tells us.


      Kick-Off Februray 21 - 11:00 AM

  7. Universal Design (Be a Course Superhero) (QM Standard 8)

    1. Building with everyone in mind.
    2. Progressive enhancement (create at the lowest level of complexity and then complement and enhance).
    3. Walk a page in their shoes (using accessibility tools).
    4. Low-hanging fruit and the treetops (how to plan "accessibilitizing" a course).
    5. The overlooked hero - white space.
