Email Security

Information Technology works to prevent users from receiving unsolicited commercial e-mail (spam) and attached viruses in their e-mail accounts. The University e-mail system automatically blocks e-mails with certain subject lines and certain types of attachments in order to do this.

Here is a list of e-mail subject lines and attachments commonly used in spam and virus e-mails. If you are unable to receive or send a legitimate e-mail message that contains one of these subject lines, using a different subject line will work. For your own security, do not open any e-mail attachments that you have not specifically asked to be sent to you, even from senders you know.

Subject lines in e-mail

Using a short, clear subject line that briefly describes your e-mail message will not only help avoid these problems, but also will make it more likely that the recipient will see and respond to your message quickly. Some good examples of clear subject lines:

Subject: Questions about our meeting on 4/30/2004
Subject: Here is the XYZ file you requested
Subject: Are you available for lunch on Friday 4/23?
