First Steps for Building Your Web Page

Policies About Web Pages at WNMU

Before you start to create your Web page, you need to read and agree to WNMU's Personal Web Site Policy and Acceptable Use Policy. By creating your Web pages and placing them in the personal Web page area of the WNMU Web site, you are stating that you agree to abide by these policies.
Remember that for most people, the Internet is slow. It is better to have many small pages linked together in an easy to use way than to have one big page. Large pictures should go on individual pages linked from a "gallery" page made up of small "thumbnail" pictures.

Also, remember that changing the size of a picture in the HTML code does not actually change the size of a picture file. To make smaller picture files, use a graphics program such as Fireworks or Photoshop.

Decide What You Want On Your Page

To make even the simplest Web page, you need to first decide what you want to put there. Do you want a brief biography, pictures of your home and family, a list of your favorite books and movies? Write those things out first, and then build your Web page so that it presents those things in a simple, attractive, and easily accessible manner. Remember: Content comes first, then design!

What to Use/How to Learn to Build Your Web Page

There are a number of software programs you can use to build your Web pages, but a Web page can be created using nothing more than the Notepad program found in Windows or the TextEdit/SimpleText programs found in Macintosh OS. Many of the links provided here have links to and information about other software programs you can use, as well as step-by-step instructions and tutorials on Web page building.

"Can you make/update/change my Web page for me?"

Information Technology/Helpdesk personnel are not able to create, update, or troubleshoot personal Web pages for students or faculty. Fortunately, though, building a Web page is easy enough that you won't need us to do it for you! The links in the "Tools and Tutorials" section are just a very few of the thousands of resources available on the World Wide Web for everything from basic page design to the fanciest layout and interactive options. Start with those, and you'll soon have a great looking page!
