RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direct supervision of the Director of First Year Experience, responsible for the management, supervision and evaluation of all service for students with disabilities. This full time position is responsible for students with special needs: assist in securing assistance from community-based organizations, develop activities to address development needs, and secure assistance from the appropriate State and Federal Agencies. Provide academic, career, and personal advising for students with disabilities. Assist with information relating to admission, matriculation, financial aid, degree preparation and personal advising for students with disabilities. Coordinate and supervise all tutoring, note taking, recording, test administering and interpreting services for students with special need. Represent WNMU in statewide advisory committees and in the New Mexico Association for Higher Education for Adults with Disabilities as a state board member. Represent WNMU in working with Public Schools Special Education Directors with the transitional process of high school students to college; attend the exit Individual Educational Plan (IEP) of each disabled high-school student expressing interest in seeking admission to WNMU. Procure necessary equipment and supplies designated for disabled students. Monitor progress of all special needs students for retention purposes. Provide academic guidance, assistance, counseling, and advising to new, current, probationary, and returning students; assists students with course selection and schedule adjustments based on known as well as unknown major, provides academic support counseling including procedure for placing a student appeal, student/faculty issues and concerns, career planning/academic choices, and degree audits, resolves issues and facilitates planning. Meets with prospective students and parents to discuss the student's career and/or academic goals and objectives with respect to Western New Mexico University’s program offerings. Schedules advisement appointments with probationary students, provides guidance and counseling for methods to improve academic performance; orients entering students to the University; meets with prospective students and parents to discuss the student's career and/or academic goals and objectives with respect to Western New Mexico University’s program offerings. Duties will require some evening work hours and occasional weekend work hours as necessary. Initial and recurring training will be conducted at the Silver City Campus. Serve on faculty and staff committees, advisory boards, and process-management teams; and performs other duties as assigned by management.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree in Special Education, Counseling, Psychology or related field required with two to four years experience in the areas of counseling, advising, student services and/or program administration.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with government agencies. Experience with diverse groups and proficiency in Spanish

SALARY: $29,488 Annually
