  • Excessive Absences and Tardiness.
  • At risk.
  • Has never been to class.
Learning Resource Center

Instructors of 100, 200 and 300 level classes are asked to identify students that are having academic difficulties, and might need assistance in their classes. Students that are having academic difficulty will receive a letter in the mail, and will be contacted by a member of the Early Alert staff.  An Early Alert staff member will guide each student that is having difficulties in the right direction toward academic success. Students that fit the above criteria will be contacted by Early Alert,  and the Early Alert staff will help each student make an appointment with an Academic Peer Mentor.  The staff will also refer each student to the proper resources which will greatly increase their chances of success at WNMU. Early Alert has increased their employee power, so that they may assist more students.  Peer Mentor assistance, personal counseling, computer instruction, and other services the university has to offer may be part of the student's plan to recovery. The Early Alert staff also collects information on students for research purposes, so the University can create more educational resources for students.

Here's how Early Alert works:

Identifying the student: Instructors, with the aid of class rosters that are passed out at 4, 8 and 12 week intervals, will identify students that are at risk. If a student is not doing well in one or more of the above criteria ; Early Alert will contact the student.

Notifying the Student: A letter will be sent to each student that has been identified, in this letter will be some educational resources that are available to the student.

Assisting the student: The Early Alert team of dedicated Peer Mentors will help the student find the proper resources to improve their chances of success at WNMU. Peer Mentors will help setup an appointment with the proper Academic Peer Mentor, counselor or advisor. Peer Mentors work very hard to help each student overcome their academic barriers.

Encouraging the student: Our highly trained Peer Mentor staff has academic tips that can benefit all students, and we have handouts on:

  • How to manage time, and how to make time work for the student.
  • How to strengthen test taking abilities.
  • How to manage stress in this hustle bustle world, so the student can deal with stress.
  • How to strengthen note taking skills.
  • How to make money stretch just a little bit further, so the student can keep his or her finances in check.
Peer Mentors are trained to help students with note taking skills, stress management and time management, as well as their specific subject. The number one goal of Early Alert is to help students achieve their academic dreams and endeavors.
