PEER MENTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The primary duties of Peer Mentors are to assist students with studying and learning skills, and serve as a liaison between students and the university programs and services, and assist in the provision of academic support services including the tutorial and early alert processes and supplemental instruction.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Initiate personal contact via phone or other means of communication with new and continuing students to (1) academically mentor students in specific subjects (2) assist students with preparation of semester academic plans, and (3) discuss academic performance appraisals.
  • Maintain accurate records of student contacts.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports summarizing student contacts and activities.
  • Assist students in understanding the requirements, procedures, and resources of WNMU.
  • Assist in the implementation of activities related to the Academic Support Center to include Freshman Seminar and Summer Bridge programs.
  • Assist in the development of printed materials for the Academic Support Center.
  • Help monitor LRC resources to ensure they are available and in good working order for students to use (computers, printers, furniture, books, etc.).
  • Assist in the supervision of the LRC.
Job Qualifications
  • Sophomore or higher classification and have completed one or more semesters at WNMU.
  • Overall GPA of 2.8 and As or Bs in the targeted courses.
  • Ability to communicate well orally and relate meaningfully with fellow students as determined in a personal interview.
  • Responsibility and willingness to work under supervision.
  • Previous experience in either teaching or tutoring beneficial.
  • Two strong recommendations from university faculty.
  • No campus disciplinary record.
Job Requirements

Peer Mentors are expected to:

  • Complete six hours of basic training during the first week of the semester.
  • Maintain a 2.8 GPA each semester they are employed.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training programs and staff meetings as requested.
  • Become familiar with all services of the Academic Support Center and related services.
  • Assist students individually and in groups in subject matters, studying and learning skills.
  • Adhere to a predetermined work schedule and keep records of hours worked and students’ contacts.
  • Behave professionally and dress appropriately.
Organizational Relationships

The Peer Mentor reports to the Director of the Academic Support Center and interacts with staff from other units of the department.

Work Schedule

The work schedule will depend on the department’s needs, not to exceed 15 hours per week and may include weekends.
