Procedure for Selection of Graduation Speakers

1. List is obtained of expected graduates for this term ordered by GPA.

2. List is reviewed and the four candidates having the highest GPA are identified. If another student(s) has the same GPA as the fourth identified student, s/he will also be included. Candidates are polled to determine which ones plan to participate in the graduation ceremony.

3. Potential speaker candidates for the baccalaureate and masters students will be:

asked to complete a form which includes: (1) a listing of extra‑mural activities categorized by on campus or off campus; (2) a brief statement indicating the nature of the message they would like to present to the student body and why they should be chosen to deliver this message; (3) a signature authorizing the ad hoc committee to review their academic record.

4. An ad hoc committee appointed by the VPAA will review the forms. The committee may choose to interview one or more students or may select the speaker on the basis of information provided. Preference will be given to those who will complete all course work prior to the graduation ceremony. A ranked listing of preferred speakers will be provided the VPAA, who will contact the student(s) to ascertain their willingness to address the graduating class and guests.
