Graduate Scholarship Regulations

    Purpose:  The Graduate Scholarship is intended to increase enrollment of students from groups traditionally underrepresented in a graduate education.  Special emphasis will be placed upon academic fields of high national or regional priority and fields in which under-representation has been greatest.

    Eligibility:  A Graduate Scholarship may be awarded to an individual who:

    • is a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien;
    • is a New Mexico resident;
    • is a member of a group underrepresented in his/her discipline;
    • has been regularly admitted or is currently enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate program;
    • demonstrates a financial need according to a standard needs analysis (FAFSA);
    • has submitted the Graduate Scholarship application and all necessary documentation to the office of Graduate Studies by designated deadline.

    Amount of Fellowship:  The scholarship award shall be for seven thousand two hundred dollars per year; a six hundred dollar ($600) per month stipend for a period up to twelve months.  [Appointment of half a graduate assistantship salary of two hundred fifty dollars ($250) per month for a period up to twelve months will be added to the $7,200 for a total of $10,200.]

    Duration:  Each Scholarship is for a period of one academic year.

    Distribution of Scholarship:  The Office of Graduate Studies will make the final selection based on a recommendation from the department which will examine the files of all eligible students.

    Termination:  A scholarship is terminated upon the occurrence of:

    • withdrawal from the institution by the award recipient, failure to reenroll for consecutive academic years or failure to be a full-time graduate student; or
    • substantial noncompliance by the award recipient with the Graduate Scholarship Act or the rules, regulations, or procedures promulgated by the commission.

    In order to receive funding under this scholarship, you must have proven financial need, based on a financial needs analysis, of the stipend amount.  However, you may use this space to discuss any special circumstances regarding your financial need.  The Financial Aid Office will certify eligibility.

    ·         LETTER OF INTENT – These graduate scholarships are intended for students from groups traditionally underrepresented in their chosen fields.  Please present information/documentation that you would like the Selection Committee to consider in reviewing your application.  Also include information regarding your interests, achievements, goals, extracurricular activities, etc.  Heavy emphasis is placed on the Letter of Intent when making decisions on awards.

    • COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS – You must submit in this application packet official transcripts from each institution listed on page 1.
    • A RESUME or Curriculum Vitae
    • LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION – At least two written recommendations regarding your academic accomplishments, personal characteristics, and potential.
    • FINANCIAL AID FORM  - Use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at any university Financial Aid Office.  Send the original for review to the address listed on the FAFSA and include a copy in this application packet.
