MISSION

The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve plants, animals, and the natural communities that represent the diversity of life on earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

ACTIVE PROJECTS

Mimbres River Preserve:

This preserve protects approximately 5 stream miles of the Mimbres River. The Conservancy also has a grazing permit on the Mimbres Allotment in the Gila

National Forest. This allotment includes approximately 35,000 acres of land and six miles of the Mimbres River.

Gila River Preserve:

This preserve protects approximately 2.5 stream miles of the Gila River.

The majority of the work in the Silver City field office is concentrated in five programs:

The field office also reviews plans and specifications for proposed water supply systems and waste water treatment systems as well as providing supervision in efforts such as underground storage tanks, hazardous and radioactive waste, air quality, surface water, ground water, and solid waste programs. Silver City is one of four regional offices which has Air Quality Bureau staff and one of two locations in the State with nonpoint source pollution staff (see next page).

MISSION

The purpose of the New Mexico Proper Functioning Condition Cadre is to promote riparian restoration through cooperation and collaboration.

ACTIVE PROJECTS

This multi-agency, interdisciplinary effort is accomplished by teaching and demonstrating a methodology (labeled Proper Functioning Condition or PFC) for assessing the physical functioning of riparian and wetland areas. Training is offered to State, Federal, private, industry, conservation, Tribal and volunteer groups or individuals. Among the agencies cooperating in this effort are the USDA Forest Service, United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

MISSION

The New Mexico State Land Office Site Stewardship Program is an organization of volunteers that work closely with the Land Office for the purpose of preserving and protecting cultural properties, biological, ecological and paleontological assets owned by the beneficiaries of the New Mexico State Land Office. The beneficiaries include New Mexico public schools, state universities, and state hospitals.

ACTION PROJECTS

Concerned volunteers closely monitor trust properties in order to identify vandalism, erosion, theft and other disturbances that cause waste or degradation of the State trust lands.

Volunteer training for the Site Stewardship Program is offered. Inquiries may be made to the number above.
