MISSION

"Project Soil" is an educational program designed to teach kindergarten through 5th graders about the importance of soil, the types of soil, erosion processes, and soil conservation principles.

ACTIVE PROJECTS

A kit has been developed which includes everything needed to teach the above: hands-on activities, three types of soil (loamy, clay, sandy), lesson plans, bulletin board aids, pictures showing erosion, and flip charts. A one-week project requires about 30 minutes each day. The kit is available for $150 and includes a video, "Soil: Who Needs It?", using animated "soilees" to help students better understand the importance of soil in our daily lives. Videos alone are available for $10. The cost includes shipping and handling.

NEWSLETTER: The Quivira Coalition

MISSION

The purpose of the Quivira Coalition is to teach ranchers, environmentalists, public land managers, and other members of the public that ecologically healthy rangeland and economically robust ranches can be compatible.

Our mission is to define the core issues of the grazing conflict and to articulate a new position based on common interests and common sense. This position, called the New Ranch, addresses the ecological and economic needs not only of ranchers and environmentalists, but of the nation as a whole.

ACTIVE PROJECTS

With the cooperation of the New Mexico State Land Office and a ranching permittee, the Quivira Coalition has set up a riparian demonstration project on Macho Creek, near Deming, New Mexico. Three miles of overgrazed riparian area are being managed under the principles of the New Ranch with the firm conviction that ecological health will be returned while enabling the rancher to stay in business. The project is being intensively monitored by the USDA’s Jornada Experimental Range, under the supervision of Dr. Kris Havstad.
