Several months ago we set out to compile a directory of organizations working in Southwest New Mexico in conservation, stewardship and management of natural resources. We proposed a directory to promote communication and collaboration among groups in the stewardship of natural resources, to strengthen community support and understanding, and to coordinate volunteer efforts.
We want to thank all that responded enthusiastically to our request for information. In the introductory pages you will find a map illustrating land ownership in Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna Counties and an alphabetical index of participating organizations. Each entry in the body of the directory includes a contact person, phone number, e-mail and web page address, if available, as well as the organizations mission statement and active projects in Southwest New Mexico. Entries are based on information submitted on the survey form appearing at the end of the directory.
Our appreciation goes to Western New Mexico Universitys Department of Business Administration and the University Club for their sponsorship of the directory. A grant from the University Club for postage and printing made this project possible. For nearly 30 years, the University Club has underwritten activities that benefit WNMU and Southwest New Mexico.
The editors are thankful for support, guidance, and creative efforts of community members. Suggestions from Kevin Bixby, Alice Cohen, Curtis Hayes, Susan Schock, Sally Smith, Don Rauch, and Peter Russell led to a survey instrument accommodating diverse community interests. Greg Homan of the Bureau of Land Management prepared the map. Cissy McAndrew, Director of the WNMU Development Foundation, administered the University Club grant. We extend a special thanks to Adele Springer, WMNU Department of Business Administration, and to Jim Owen, Silver City Daily Press.
We realize that this directory is not inclusive of all land, water, forests and wildlife stewardship activities in Southwest New Mexico but creation of a more comprehensive directory is a task remaining for a future edition. Until then, the editors apologize for omissions, oversights, or undetected errors in transcribing.
