History of SRPD Funds

After many years of mentoring students in research and feeling as if more time was spent in fundraising to support the research and travel to present at conferences than was spent on the research itself, Dr. Jennifer Coleman thought something needed to change for students at WNMU. With approval from the Provost at the time, Dr. Faye Vowell, she put together a proposal that would create yearly funds to support scholarship by students. During the Spring of 2012, the members of Associated Students at WNMU approved the proposal put forward by Dr. Coleman for a new student fee, the Student Research and Professional Development Funds fee.

With the news that the fund was approved by our student government, Dr. Coleman developed the needed forms and created the committee of volunteers to review applications.

The fee was put in place at $0.25/credit hour for the 2012-2013 academic year. The total fund balance for the year was $13,317, and some very talented students received support from this initiative within its very first year on campus. In the 2013-2014 academic year, the fee was raised to $0.32 at the request of Dr. Coleman.
