LUNA COUNTY
Deming is the largest
community in Luna County. It is located on Interstate 10, connecting the
city to both coasts. Food processing, energy generation, electronics and a
winery have all found Luna County to be a very profitable place to grow.
Steeped
in the history that began with the marking of the country's second
transcontinental railroad from Deming to the outposts along the Butterfield
Trail, the area is also important for its military influence over the last
century in training military troops for World War I at Camp Cody and training
bombardiers in World War II at the Deming Army Air Base, now Deming Industrial
Park. The Park offers incentives to new businesses, build-to-suit opportunities, and houses a spec building.
Deming
celebrates its history and preserves its lovely old buildings as a designated
Main Street community. It is home to an increasing number of artists who
display and sell their work in downtown galleries.
A
rockhounder's paradise, the area is also famous for its Mimbreno Indian legacy,
four state parks, outstanding museum, year-round golf course, and proximity to
Mexico. The City’s sense of humor is in full swing once a year for the Great
American Duck Race of Deming. The weekend-long celebration includes duck
races, entertainment, a pageant and a parade.
Luna
County borders Mexico with the Village of Columbus only three miles
north of the Port of Entry. Columbus Industrial Park is located on the border
with land available for lease or build-to-suit. In 1916 Columbus was the
largest town in New Mexico when Pancho Villa crossed the border and raided the
town. The Columbus Historical Museum has photographs and artifacts depicting
Village history. Nearby Pancho Villa State
Park,
on the site of Pershing’s Camp Furlong, provides recreation for the area.
For
commercial traffic commuting through the Port
of Columbus,
NM Interstate 10 is only 35 miles to the north and El Paso is one hour away via
state roads.
