ART DISCIPLINE

The art discipline encourages self-discovery while providing the facilities and assistance for developing competence in visual arts, art education, and art history. Art majors with an education emphasis may acquire a fundamental background for teaching art on the elementary and secondary levels. The art major with studio emphasis is required undergraduate preparation for graduate study in art.

MUSIC DISCIPLINE

Recognizing the need for teachers trained for a rural environment, the music discipline prepares teachers in the necessary skills to teach a comprehensive program. The curriculum includes instruction in the techniques of organizing and directing instrumental and vocal ensembles as well as teaching classroom music for kindergarten through twelfth grade.

The music program is designed to enable students to become skilled musicians while encouraging individual creativity. It is the conviction of the music discipline that well-trained musicians are able to both perform artistically as well as speak articulately and knowledgeably. All music majors and minors take a core of courses calculated to develop artistic performance based on a thorough knowledge of the historical and theoretical basis of music of all periods.

The music discipline welcomes non-majors as members of University Band, University Choir, Choral Theater Workshop, and Jazz Ensemble.

THEATER DISCIPLINE

The theater program offers the student a basic knowledge of the theater arts in theory and practice. Theater courses also train the student in the procedures and techniques that will qualify him/her to act in, direct, or produce plays. Students working toward a minor in theater have at their disposal the facilities of a laboratory theater, including classroom, workshops, and wardrobe. Two major mainstage productions are presented yearly, in the Webb Theater.

Art Major

The art major is a sixty hour program which offers an emphasis in studio art and/or art education. A core of courses required for both areas of emphasis provides essential training and competence consistent with national standards of excellence.

Art majors are required to present a senior exhibition during the last semester just prior to graduation. See your advisor for guidelines.

An emphasis in studio art allows the student a range of electives from which he/she may choose to gain either more specialized training or a broad survey in over-all art competence. No minor is required.

The art education emphasis requires the student to take basic art courses for general preparation. Methods courses appropriate to the level of teaching licensure sought are also required: i.e. ART 425, Elementary Art Methods or ART 450, Secondary Art Methods.

TEACHING ENDORSEMENT: The WNMU Art Major requirement of sixty credits exceeds the minimum New Mexico licensure guidelines of thirty-six credits for a teaching field, thereby eliminating the requirement for an additional minor of twenty-four credits.

All art majors take 48 units in the core curriculum and 15 units in their selected area of emphasis, either studio or art education.

Music Major

In order to plan for graduation within four years, students who wish to pursue a major or minor in music must declare their intention with the Student Development Center during their freshman year.

TEACHING ENDORSEMENT: The WNMU Music Major requirement of sixty credits exceeds the minimum New Mexico licensure guidelines of thirty-six credits for a teaching field, thereby eliminating the requirement for an additional minor of twenty-four credits.

All students pursuing a music major are required to present both a junior and senior recital and pass a piano proficiency examination. To ensure adequate preparation for recitals, majors are required to register for 2 credit hours per semester of applied music on their primary instrument until they have presented both recitals.

Students are required to attend recitals and concerts during the course of each semester. A current list of recitals and concerts may be obtained from the Department of Expressive Arts.

Application of music-organization credits is limited to six hours toward degree programs. However, music majors and minors are required to enroll in both University Band and University Choir as part of their professional training throughout their degree programs.

Upon completion of lower division applied music requirements, students audition during semester juries to receive permission to advance to upper division applied music courses.

Students enrolled in applied music courses are required to enroll in Applied Music Lab.

All music majors take 47 units in the core curriculum and 7 units in their selected area of emphasis, either performance or music education.
