Oreocarya suffruticosa is a common inhabitant of exposed sandy and rocky areas in lower and middle elevations. It has a silvery wooly apearance. The flowers are cream colored and have a characteristic crest at the base. With maturation, the flowers produce four identical smooth nutlets. The leaves, like many of the Boraginaceae, have a pustulate appearance.
