Boerhavia spicata is an annual herb usually found in semiarid desert scrub. It has small white flowers in
a spike. The overlapping fruits are glabrous and bluntly obovate. The fruits of the very similarB. torreyana are narrower. The stems of B. spicata are glandular and spreading pilose, whereas the stems of B. torreyana are sparsely pubescent and less glandular.
