Plants of the Gila Wilderness

Presented in Association with the
Western New Mexico University Department of Natural Sciences

Cladonia pyxidata (Linnaeus) Hoffm.
Pebbled Pixie Cup

Cladonia pyxidata is distinctive but easy to miss because of its small size. The trumpet like secondary thallus is covered with small corticate granules. The primary thallus consists of discrete squamules. Cladonia pyxidata is relatively common at the bases of trees and on humus and rocks at most elevations in the Gila.
