Dicranum brevifolium (Lindb.) Lindb.

Family: Dicranaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Dicranum muehlenbeckii var. brevifolium Lindb.

Dicranum brevifolium, Dicranum acutifolium, Dicranum fuscescens and Dicranum muehlenbeckii are all exceedingly similar and many of the identifying characteristics are not apparent in the New Mexico material. D. brevifolium is curly-crisped when dry, with stems that can be several centimeters long. The alar region is bistratose. At this time, a single specimen of Dicranum brevifolium is known from New Mexico-- collected by A. Fendler in 1847 and first identified as D. muehlenbeckii but later annotated by Wilbur Peterson (a specialist in the genus) as Dicranum brevifolium.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, & Dina Clark for permitting us to photograph this specimen!
