Frullania bolanderi Austin

Family: Frullaniaceae (formerly Jubulaceae)

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Frullania bolanderi is a leafy liverwort that is uncharacteristically easy to identify for this genus. The lobules are large, about 50-60% the width of the leaves. When dry, these lobules may give cover to the resting stage of microscopic animals. The underleaves are variable-- most commonly with two main lobes, each of which has a smaller lateral lobe or tooth. However, underleaves may be found that are nearly entire, or that seem to have up to 5 lobes. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Frullania bolanderi is the morphology of the gemmae bearing structures. These stalks stick up from the substrate and may bear several gemmae that appear just like small leaves without lobules. The color of the vegetative portion of the liverwort is gray-green, but the gemmae stalks can make up a significant proportion of the plant and appear bright green.
