Hydrogonium orientale (F. Weber) Jan Kučera

Family: Pottiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Barbula indica (Hooker) Sprengel
Tortula indica Hooker
Trichostomum orientale F. Weber

Hydrogonium orientale could at a quick glance be mistaken for Barbula unguiculata. However, two quite interesting features distinguish it. First, H. orientale has elongate cells on the abaxial surface of the distal costa that are prorate on both ends. The rest of the leaf is strongly papillose, so this feature of the costa is not as conspicuous as might be expected. The second feature of interest is the presence of clusters of tiny multicellular stalked gemmae at the bases of the leaves.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp & Dina Clark for loaning us this specimen for photography.
