Juniperus osteosperma (Torrey) Little
(Utah Juniper)

Family: Cupressaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Juniperus utahensis (Engelmann) Lemmon
Juniperus megalocarpa Sudworth
Juniperus tetragona Schlectendal var. osteosperma Torrey

Juniperus osteosperma is distributed in the northwest portion of the Gila and and in the Apache National Forest, starting in the area of Reserve. The general impression is that of a juniper with the stringy bark of Juniperus monosperma and the large glaucous seed cones of Juniperus deppeana. The cones are large, although usually containing only one large seed.
The berry-like seed cones shown here measured 12.3-15.5mm in diameter, compared to 7.4 to 7.7mm for Juniperus monosperma.
