Mannia pilosa (Hornem.) Frye & L. Clark

Family: Aytoniaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Marchantia pilosa Hornem.
Grimaldia pilosa (Hornem.) Lindb.
Neesiella pilosa (Hornem.) Schiffn.

Mannia pilosa is a complex thallous liverwort with purple scales underneath that have appendages which are usually 2-3 seriate at the base and uniseriate at the apex. The cross section of the thallus shows about 2/3 of the thickness at the center of the thallous to be aerenchyma (parenchyma with air spaces). The aerenchyma layer in M. sibirica is thinner, closer to 1/2 of the width of the thallous at the center, and the individual air spaces are noticably smaller. Mannia sibirica is very similar to M. pilosa and was at one time considered to be a variety of that species.
