Mannia sibirica is a complex thallous liverwort with purple scales underneath that have appendages which are usually 2-3 seriate at the base and uniseriate at the apex. The cross section of the thallus shows about half of the thickness at the center of the thallous to be aerenchyma (parenchyma with air spaces). The aerenchyma layer in M. pilosa is thicker, closer to 2/3 of the width of the thallous at the center, and the individual air spaces are larger. Mannia sibirica is very similar to M. pilosa and was at one time considered to be a variety of that species.
