Neoorthocaulis attenuatus (Mart.) L. Söderstr., De Roo & Hedd.

Family: Anastrophyllaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Barbilophozia attenuata (Mart.) Loeske
and many more.

Neoorthocaulis attenuatus is a small liverwort with succubous 3- (occasionally 2-) lobed leaves. The leaf bases lack cilia and underleaves are absent. There are numerous somewhat inconspicuous, blunt-tipped gemmiparous branches that arise from the apices of main shoots. The minute gemmae are angular and only consist of a few cells. N. attenuatus is dioicous, with perianths terminal and long-exerted. It is found on rocky outcrops at high elevation and has been collected once in New Mexico by Mahler at the base of Wheeler Peak. Our photographs are of a collection by Karen Blisard from Maine.
