Neoorthocaulis floerkei is a liverwort in which many of the shoots grow erect, unlike most other liverworts. The leaves have three lobes, and usually two appendages on the leaf near the attachment to the stem. There are underleaves that are highly dissected. The leaves, underleaves, and rhizoids are very crowded on the stem, making anatomy hard to discern without dissection and a microscope.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium, Erin Tripp and Dina Clark for permitting is to photograph this specimen
