Polytrichum ohioense Renauld & Cardot

Synonyms:
Polytrichastrum ohioense (Renauld & Cardot) G.L. Sm.

Polytrichum ohioense has bounced between Polytrichum and Polytrichastrum. It lacks greatly expanded laminal margins that folded over to nearly enclose the lamellae in other members of Polytrichum. The margins are toothed and only a few cells wide. There are dozens of 3-5 cell tall, smooth lamellae on top of the costa. The cap cell of each lamella is wider than the cells beneath it and oval shaped. The capsule is 4-angled.
