Preissia quadrata (Scop.) Nees

Family: Marchantiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Marchantia quadrata Scop.

Preissia quadrata is quite similar to Marchantia polymorpha and in fact is still sometimes placed in the genus Marchantia. P. quadrata differs from Marchantia in the absence of gemmae cups. The thalli of P. quadrata are pale green and have purple margins. We will be supplementing the pix here with ones of fresh specimens this spring.
Many thanks to the University of Colorado and Dina Clark for loaning us this specimen which was collected by John R. Crutchfield in 1965.
