Targionia hypophylla Linnaeus

Family: Targioniaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Targionia hypophylla is a complex thallous liverwort most easily recognized when it is reproductive. It has a very characteristic 2-valved duck-bill shaped shiny black involucre that arises on the ventral surface of the apex of a main branch. The thalli have blackish ventral scales that roll up when dry into thin tubes. We found Targionia hypophylla in mixed conifer forest at middle to upper elevation on soil.
