Tortula muralis is surprisingly uncommon in New Mexico, given how widespread it is elsewhere in North America. It has exserted capsules, a border of thick-walled cells, and a long hairpoint. No other New Mexico Tortula has these three characters. It also has densely papillose laminal cells and a sporophyte with a peristome of 32 long filaments twisted about one full turn.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, and Dina Clark for loaning us this specimen for photography.
