Trichostomopsis crispifolia Cardot

Trichostomopsis umbrosa has a long lanceolate leaf shape reminiscent of a Trichostomum species, but the fleshy leaf apex of a Didymodon rigidulus. The inflated pericostal cells and elongate marginal cells at the leaf base are different than either one of those species though. The upper leaf margin is bistratose. There are almost no papillae visible. The costal cross section is unusual for having an abaxial sterid band and two or three layers of guide cells with a hint of an adaxial pad of cells on the costa. We found Trichostomopsis umbrosa on sand while climbing up a steep slope about 20 feet from a spring in the desert.
