Online Housing Damage
Appeal Form
In the event that you are assessed damage
fines, you will have a means to appeal those charges through this Online
Housing Damage Appeal Form. Do not submit this form before fines have been
applied to your student account. If you are assessed damage fines, then you
will be notified of these fines by the Business Office in your business office statement.
There are a few guidelines to this process that you need to understand if you
decide to appeal any damages.
Residential student
housing damage appeals will be accepted online only through the submission of
this form.
Phone calls, text
messages, office visits or email to The Office of Housing and Residence Life or
any other office will not be accepted as an official appeal.
Online appeals will
only be accepted after damage charges have been applied to your student
account. Appeals submitted prior to charges being placed on your student
account will not be considered and it will be up to you to resubmit this form
at the appropriate time.
The Housing Damage
Appeals Committee will meet once a quarter or as needed to address official and
properly submitted damage appeals.
Students will be
notified via email of the status of their official and properly submitted appeal.
If a late fee has
been assessed due to a damage charge and the student has successfully appealed
the charge(s), the late fee will be reversed.
Transcripts will
not be released with a balance due.
Students may choose
to pay the outstanding housing damage balance prior to the outcome of the
appeal. If the appeal is in favor of the student, those charges will be
reversed and credited to the student’s account.
Partial reversals
of charges are possible. (i.e., some charges could stand while others may be
reversed or decreased).
In situations where
one roommate or suitemate vacates before the other(s) and there is damage
assessed to a common area (living room, kitchen, bathroom, etc.), all residents
assigned to that apartment, room or suite will be charged equally until the
person responsible can be identified in writing. Residents must come to an
agreement and the responsible party must provide signed documentation
acknowledging their responsibility to The Office of Housing and Residence Life
via fax (575) 538-6316 or via U.S. Postal Service at PO Box 680, Silver City
New Mexico, 88062, or from their Western New Mexico student email account to housing@wnmu.edu.
All decisions of
the Housing Damage Appeals Committee are final.
