Synonyms:
There is considerable taxonomic confusion regarding G. crinitoleucophaea Cardot, which is accepted by Hastings & Greven as valid in FNA. In her book The Genus Grimmia Hedw. Eva Maier, however, considers G. crinitoleucophaea Cardot to be a synonym of the accepted name Grimmia tergestina Bruch & Schimper. Grimmia poecilostoma is considered to be a synonym of G. crinitoleucophaea and therefore we consider it a synonym of Grimmia tergestina.
To summarize then, we consider Grimmia tergestina=G. crinitoleucophaea=Grimmia poecilostoma and we accept Grimmia tergestina as the accepted name.
We have collected this species previously outside of the Gila as
Grimmia crinitoleucophaea Cardot.
Grimmia tergestina has awned leaves that are 2 stratose above the base. The margins are incurved making the
leaf concave. The seta is attached eccenctrically to the base of the immersed capsule which has a few large stomata at its base.
The peristome teeth are delicate and heavily fenestrated. The annulus is revoluble (detachable) and obvious, reminiscent of the annulus of Funaria hygrometrica.
The operculum is long pointed. The basal cells are thin-walled in younger leaves.
