BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

New Mexico is traditionally competitive in attracting entrepreneurs and small businesses, and has developed programs to entice organizations both large and small to locate – or relocate - in the Land of Enchantment. State and local governments have worked together to open avenues for economic development: provisions for tax incentives and programs for economic growth are widely available to attract new businesses and investors to this region.

The four-county area of Catron, Hidalgo, Grant, and Luna, is nearly 17,366 square miles in size, and is home to communities ranging in population from 400 to 31,000. Our goal is to provide you with the tools you need to make your business successful in New Mexico, and to support economic growth in every county, city, town, and village.

Beginning in 2010 the New Mexico Small Business Development Center will celebrate 20 years of service. The NMSBDC offers counseling services free of charge to assist new business and existing business to be successful and create a stronger economy. The southwest portion of New Mexico is serviced by the SBDC located on the campus of Western New Mexico University servicing Grant, Catron, Luna, Hidalgo Counties: while Truth or Consequences is serviced by the SBDC out of New Mexico State in Las Cruces, NM

To better prepare you for opening a business, Southwest Office of Regional Data (SWORD) provides data and quick links to resources within your community.  General information includes contact information for local city and county offices, the New Mexico State Regulations and Licensing Department for businesses needing information on regulations, licensing or permits to operate within the state.  If you are located in an unincorporated or rural area, you will most likely register your business with the county.  If you are operating within city limits of a larger community, you will register your business at the city office.  Local business licenses cost $25.00 to $35.00 annually.  All businesses must register with the State of New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department.  You will receive a CRS-1 Filer’s Kit containing forms and instructions for filing gross receipts tax.  If you are unsure on how to proceed, please contact your area Small Business Development Center office.
